What to do if you smell propane gas

Propane’s a pretty safe energy source, but it’s important to know what to do if you ever smell it.

First things first — you need to know how propane smells. On its own, propane doesn’t have a smell so an odorant, usually ethyl mercaptan, is added during production. This makes it easy to notice a leak. The smell is most commonly described as being akin to skunk spray or rotten eggs.

So, if you detect that smell at home, don’t panic. Just follow these directions:

• Get everyone out of the house right away.
• Once everyone’s at a safe distance, give 911 a call and contact B&B Propane.
• Don’t use light switches, thermostats, phones, vapes or appliances on your way out.
• If you can manage it safely, turn off the gas at the propane tank or cylinder.
• Let the professionals check for leaks and handle repairs.
• Technicians will fix the leak, check your gas appliances, and relight any pilot lights.
• Don’t switch the gas back on, even if the smell’s gone. The technician will handle that.
• Don’t re-enter the house until the emergency crew or technician gives the all-clear.
